Description

The main artist of the calendar pictures in the Grimani Breviary was Gerard Horenbout, a Free Master of the Ghent Painter’s Guild and a collaborator of the famous workshops of Alexander and Simon Bening at Ghent and Bruges. The influence of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry (from 1411-16) is mirrored to a surprising extent in the various quotations of Horenbout’s calendar pictures in the Grimani Breviary slightly varying the original. It was supposed that this codex, decorated partly by other artists, especially the Benings, was written and illuminated from around 1510 onward.

The Grimani Breviary, with its 110 full-page miniatures and abundant marginal décor with spread flowers, vine tendrils and animals, became one of the most renowned prayerbooks of the time.
