Frankfurter Buchmesse 2019

After the fair is before the fair

This year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse (October, 16-20, 2019) is coming to an end and we are already preparing for our next book fair in Guadalajara, Mexico (30thof Nov. – 8thof Dec., 2019) – but more on this in another post. For now, we would like to share with you our impressions from Frankfurt.

Together with our colleagues and friends form the Faksimile Verlag and Eikon Editores from Spain, we are able to look back on five intensive exhibition days. We are especially pleased that once more both, University Professor Dr. Eberhard König and Dr. Dieter Röschel, actively supported us and we could benefit from their all-embracing knowledge.

This year our new products came thick and fast. We would like to particularly highlight our specially created app „Living Manuscripts“. Following the slogan „History meets High-Tech“ we presented an absolute world first: thanks to Augmented Reality for medieval manuscripts selected miniature pages came to life! Here you can read more about our project “Living Manuscripts”. Even the Frankfurter Buchmesse became aware of our Augmented Reality and we formed part of this year’s guided tour through the book fair during THE ARTS+ / B3 Innovation Day.

To give you a taste of our next facsimile edition, the Berry Apocalypse, we presented a documentation folder with four fine art facsimile single pages. The Berry Apocalypse – one of the most illustrious manuscripts from the Duke of Berry’s library – originated probably around 1410 in Paris, and the performing artist was named after his masterpiece, the master of the Berry Apocalypse. On 87 large-format parchment leaves 85 expressive miniatures, special in quality and drama, which reflect the content of the visionary text, can be found.

In addition, we brought to life folio 37v “Archangel Michael fights the devils” with our new Augmented Reality app “Living Manuscripts”.

Moreover we presented our reprint of the sky atlas „Harmonia Macrocosmica“ by Andreas Cellarius. The original of 1661 of the University and Regional Library Darmstadt impresses with 29 elaborated coloured copperplate engravings, in addition to a copperplate sheet, the frontispiece, at the beginning of the manuscript.

Our colleagues from the Faksimie Verlag had a very special gem in their luggage. Under the series “Treasures of Knowledge” they presented the first of 14 copies of the Paris Manuscripts by Leonardo da Vinci. The series starts with the book called „Manuscrit A“ and allows immersing in the thoughts of this great Renaissance Man. There is also a page to admire using our Augmented Reality App “Living Manuscripts“.

Once again we invited to our traditional aperitif at our exhibition stand. Every year we are very happy to come together with our publishing colleagues, partners and friends discussing new projects and current topics in the book industry with Spanish and Austrian delicacies. This valuable exchange of ideas between friends is very gratifying for us and we will definitely keep this tradition for the years to come.

Finally we want to sincerely thank our colleagues and friends for the strong interest and the tremendous support before, during and after the book fair. We are already looking forward to cooperating again with you during the upcoming Frankfurter Buchmesse.
