Frankfurt Book Fair is calling!
From October 19th to 23rd, 2022 you will find us at the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBM 2022) – even represented twice: on the one hand we will present our latest facsimile projects in the usual environment in Hall 3.1/ H121, together with our publishing friends, the Faksimile Verlag and Eikon Editores. On the other hand, we are expanding our presence with our Medieval Art Stories brand to reach additional audiences. You will find us integrated in the stand for non-book articles one floor down in Hall 3.0/ E21.
We are looking forward to your visit and can hardly wait to be able to present our new projects to you in Frankfurt. Meanwhile we provide you with a little foretaste of our latest facsimile editions:
The Stars of Samarkand
We were particularly taken with this manuscript. The various constellations from the astronomical Arabian world date back from the 10th century. The scholar Al-Sufi corrected and supplemented the explanations of Claudius Ptolemy. Five centuries later, Prince Ulugh Beg had this text calligraphed and painted as a magnificent manuscript for his personal library. We have now published this very codex, which is kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris under the signature MS arabe 5036, as a faithful facsimile edition. The script gives us a glimpse of the legendary Samarkand in the 15th century – the mythical centre of the Silk Road and a synonym for oriental splendour under the Timurids.
This manuscript has also inspired some of our fine art merchandising products from Medieval Art Stories.
The Aratea Vaticana
We stay with the starry sky but this time we plunge into the second half of the 15th century in Italy. The Aratea Vaticana is considered one of the most beautiful astronomical manuscripts and impresses with its masterfully painted miniatures showing the constellations of the sky. This codex is undoubtedly a gem of Italian Renaissance art and an exceptional masterpiece of book art.
In this context there is also news from Living Manuscripts – our augmented reality app – because we bring the planisphere to life and take you with us to a dazzling trip to the stars.
Of Plants and Animals
Furthermore, we are presenting a new facsimile project at the book fair. However, we don’t want to reveal too much right now. Just so much in advance: It is a medical manuscript in which, among other things, medicinal herbs and animals are explained and illustrated. The original codex dates from the late 12th century and lies in the British Library in London. Thanks to our documentation, you can already take a first look at this impressive medical treatise at our stand.
